Amenorrhea

Amenorrhea- 7 Best Homeopathic Medicines

Amenorrhea is a medical term that refers to the absence of menstrual periods in women who are of reproductive age. It can be classified as primary (when a woman has never had a menstrual period by age 16) or secondary (when a woman who has previously had normal menstrual cycles stops menstruating for at least three consecutive months).

Causes of Amenorrhea

Natural causes that may cause absence of menses are pregnancy, lactation or menopause. However, there are various other factors that may contribute to amenorrhea such as:

  • Hormonal imbalances: Disruption in the hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle such as abnormal levels of estrogen, progesterone or thyroid hormones, can lead to amenorrhea.
  • Stress: Physical or emotional stress can affect the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates the menstrual cycle, leading to amenorrhea.
  • Excessive exercise: Intense physical activity, particularly when combined with low body weight, can disrupt hormone levels and lead to amenorrhea.
  • Weight loss or low body weight: Significant weight loss or being significantly underweight can disrupt the hormonal balance necessary for menstruation.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a common hormonal disorder characterized by enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges. It can cause irregular menstruation or amenorrhea.
  • Thyroid disorders: Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can disrupt the menstrual cycle and cause amenorrhea.
  • Pituitary tumors: Tumors in the pituitary gland can disrupt hormone production and lead to amenorrhea.
  • Premature ovarian failure: Also known as premature menopause, this condition occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop functioning normally before the age of 40, leading to amenorrhea and infertility.
  • Medications: Certain medications, such as some antidepressants, antipsychotics, chemotherapy drugs and hormonal contraceptives, can cause amenorrhea as a side effect.
  • Anatomic abnormalities: Structural problems in the reproductive organs such as congenital defects or scarring from surgeries or infections, can interfere with menstruation.

These are just some of the possible causes of amenorrhea and only a healthcare professional can help diagnose the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
